about
Spring 2011
Early in 2011, Ian Cooke released his track "The Race" as an ongoing remix project, inviting collaborators to play with the elements of the track and add their own parts, which would then be included in the project for others to use in their remixes. After they announced the project, but before they released the tracks for it, I began my cover working off an old version of the song that Ian had included in the "Vasoon" EP. Playing off of both that version and the full band version, I really got to see the way the band created such a dynamic arc with a song that was built off of a short loop, and I tried to maintain that as I messed around with my arrangement. The samples from the Track & Field NES game fell into place like they had always belonged there, so I put it in the title. Musically, it made me think of a continue screen, so I played up that countdown/suspense vibe a little bit.
The remix project is still up at Ian Cooke's bandcamp page, including my 8-bit tracks, so go ahead and try your hand at remixing the tune. Also check out the other albums while you're there.
